STARTING AND STOPPING THE HUSQVARNA CHAINSAW

Starting and stopping the Husqvarna chainsaw is simple.

Follow these steps to start and stop a Husqvarna chainsaw to ensure safe usage and a longer life for your chainsaw

  • Activate the chain brake before starting the chainsaw. When starting your chainsaw with a cold engine, set the choke control in the choke position. Press the air purge 5 or 6 times. Press the decompression valve.
  • Pull the starter handle with your right hand and pull out the starter cord slowly until you feel a resistance. Then, firmly pull the starter handle. Pull rapidly until the engine fires, or tries to start. Listen for a noise that sounds like the engine partially started, or fired for a few revolutions.
  • Push in the choke control and push in the decompression valve again. Repeat pulling the starter handle until the engine starts. Set the engine to idle be depressing the throttle lock and quickly increasing the throttle RPMs with the throttle trigger and releasing immediately. Disengage the chain brake before using your chainsaw.
  • When starting you chainsaw with a warm or previously run engine, pull the choke control out and push it back in again. Press the air purge at least 6 times. Press the decompression valve.
  • Pull the starter handle with your right hand and pull out the starter cord slowly until you feel a resistance. Then, firmly and rapidly pull the starter handle. Pull rapidly until the engine fires, or tries to start. Set the engine to idle as soon as possible. Disengage the chain brake before using your chainsaw. Stop the engine by switching off the ignition.

  • Wear safety glasses and gloves.
  • Disengage the chain brake. Remove the bar nuts and the clutch cover. Remove the spacers and discard. Fit the bar over the bar bolts and move it to the rearmost position.
  • Place the chain over the drive sprocket. The cutter teeth should face forward on the top edge of the bar. Check that the chain correctly fits in the bar.
  • Fit the clutch cover on the unit. Tighten the bar nuts. Tension the chain. Make sure the chain can still be turned easily by hand. Tighten the bar nuts with a combination spanner.
  • Check the chain tension frequently until the chain is run in.

Before attempting any type of maintenance disengage clutch, turn off engine, wait for the drum to come to a complete stop, install the drum lock pin, disconnect battery, and make sure the ignition key is in your possession.

Before working inside the infeed hopper or under the top feedwheel remove the easy climb springs from the top yoke, raise the yoke , install the yoke lock pin, safety chain the yoke in the raised position, and insert a wooden block to assist in holding the yoke in the raised position.

Do NOT under any circumstance attempt to rotate the chipper drum while someone is inside the infeed hopper. They may become seriously injured. Do NOT do this!

After One Hour with a New Machine

It is very important after you have operated a new machine for approximately an hour to shut down the machine and recheck all nuts, bolts, belts, and hydraulic fittings and retighten as needed.

It is normal for nuts and bolts to loosen once on a new piece of machinery. If you tighten them now, there is a good possibility they won’t loosen again. Certain nuts and bolts should be checked periodically such as anvil and knife nuts and bolts, etc. for torque and fit.

Most of the nuts used on the machine are self locking. After a nut or bolt has been removed five times, it should be replaced to insure proper tightness. This is especially critical on the chipper knife nuts and bolts.

Belt Tension Adjustment – Hand Fed Brush Chippers

Belt Tension Adjustment

New belts stretch very soon and must be adjusted several times in the first few hours of operation. Adjust after one hour of operation, then every four hours until the belts quit stretching. Failure to do this will cause the belts to burn and fly off, which is not covered under warranty.

GENERAL RULES FOR TENSIONING

  • Check tensioning during the first 2 through 48 hours of run-in operation especially.
  • Over tensioning or under tensioning shortens belt and bearing life.
  • Keep belts free from foreign materials that may cause the belt to slip.
  • Make V-drive inspection on a periodic basis. Never use belt dressing as this will damage the belt and cause early failure.
  • Belts should never be forced over the sheave. Allow enough room for belts to slip on.
  • Always make sure sheaves are aligned properly.
